Podworska Carriage

Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Vehicles and harnesses
Ziegewagen is a little leisure carriage for children of several years old from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, belonging to the collection of nearly 100 horse-drawn vehicles gathered by the museum in Łańcut and constantly enriched. It includes vehicles of different kind, from presentable to rustic, from 18th to 20th century. They come primarily from museum purchases; only a few were donated. Most of them have undergone general conservation or restoration, already when belonging to the museum’s collection. The Ziegawen, which the museum purchased in 2002, has undergone only conservative renovation consisting of the change of upholstery and the reconstruction of one lantern. The extremely original and rare little leisure carriage for children Ziegewagen, designed for a paired horse-team, is extremely luxurious – it is equipped with candle lanterns, clamp-on handbrake and even a rear coachman seat for the servant. It is a classic carriage for independent driving, reflecting a duc without the folding hood, miniaturised to the scale of 2–5 year old children. Its origins are unknown. Teams used for children carriages consisted of appropriately small animals. The most picturesque were the goat teams - because the harnessed goats consisted of species with long hair and spectacularly curved horns. It is exactly such a harness which was used for the Łańcut little carriage, hence its name, borrowed from the German nomenclature. In addition to goats, there were also ponies or donkeys harnessed to the children vehicles. Aldona Cholewianka-Kruszyńska
