Fan

Part of the collection: Outfit

Popularization note

The cover of the folded, pleated fan (never attached to the ribs of the frame) is made of white, kid leather decorated with gouache. The decoration consists of three views of the ruins from the Roman Forum enclosed in a tondo. The largest one in the centre, depicts the Temple of Saturn. The smaller one on the left shows the Temple of Romulus, and the one on the right shows the Temple of Venus and Roma. The smaller tondos are enclosed in yellow borders with a wreath of flowering plant tendril. Between the tondos and on the sides of the smaller ones, there were placed grotesques. As well as the tondos and the entire composition is surrounded by a narrow, linear lilac frame. The background of the tondos is a white wavy line on a malachite background. The upper and lower arches are additionally decorated with a narrow malachite stripe. The entire fan cover is enclosed in a linear frame in droplet red.

The described fan cover belongs to the collection of 16 fan covers purchased by the Museum-Zamek in Łańcut; 11 of them, including the ones described, form a cycle decorated with ruins of ancient buildings painted by the same painter.
