The tablespoon

Part of the collection: Metale

Popularization note

The tablespoon comes from a set for six with a total of 36 pieces.

The cutlery set consists of: 6 dessert spoons, 6 tea spoons, 6 coffee spoons, 6 table forks, 6 table spoons, and 6 snack forks.

The cutlery is kept in a dedicated oak case with a bottom lined with a soft textile. The case cover is lined with soft satin with the gold logo of the maker (J. Ludwig Juwelier) in the centre. The obverse of the cutlery handle is decorated with an eclectic motif. The reverse features the coat of arms, i.e. an oak twig with leaves and acorns. The same crest can be seen on the case cover. The handle of each cutlery piece is stamped with a punch and a silver quality symbol of 800. This means an alloy with 80 per cent silver content with 20 per cent of other metals. Products from this quality silver were manufactured in the Prussian and Austrian partitions. In the Prussian partition, a regulation dating back to 1888 required that only products with the quality of 800 and above should be marked. In the Austrian partition, after 1866, a system of single-digit markings was introduced where 1 meant the quality of 950, 2 meant 900, 3 meant 800 and 4 meant 750.
