Bride's headdress
1901 — 1920
National Museum in Lublin
Part of the collection: Folk craft of the Lublin Region (19th/20th c.)
This ceremonial bridal headdress was made from factory materials, haberdashery ribbons and decorative elements, such as sequins, beads, silver thread, and artificial flowers, in the village of Piotrków in the municipality of Krzczonów at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a kind of cap (diameter 19 cm) made of red material, the surface of which is densely covered with artificial flowers, leaves, and sequins on wires. The front edge of the cap is additionally decorated with red and green harmonious ribbons. Underneath the ribbons, glass pendants, with three strings each, fall into the hair. Ten wide openwork ribbons with floral motifs were fastened at the back. The hat is tied under the chin with a red ribbon, giving it the shape of a wide bow. This type of headdress was distinguished by the richness of the decorations, which not all future brides could afford. Therefore, in one village different forms of headgear were worn, namely, the more traditional ones worn by older women, and newer ones, with innovations introduced by brides following the novelties observed in neighbouring sub-regions. This form of ceremonial head decoration survived until the First World War Later on, brides wore white wedding dresses with veils.
