Glorietta
19th / 20th century
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Photography
The photograph presents a fragment of a moat with walls from the north-western side, the Gloriette and the main bridge from the western side in the background, as well as a fragment of the western facade of the castle and the orangery. The moat, together with the walls and earthen embankments, comprised the Łańcut fortifications erected in the 17th century. At the end of the 18th century, the system was no longer needed; therefore, inside the moat, in direct vicinity of the castle, the first garden was set up, and linden alleys were planted in place of the embankments, encircling the moat. The Classicist Gloriette, located in the north-western corner within the walls, similarly to the orangery decorated in the same style and located in the south, were designed for Princess Izabella Lubomirska (deceased in 1816) by Christian Peter Aigner. During the modernisation work carried out in the Łańcut residence at the turn of the 20th century by Roman Potocki, Third Lord Ordynat and his wife Elżbieta née Radziwiłł, a new stone bridge was erected in place of the old one, with a balustrade decorated with sculptures of putti, eagles and vases where decorative plants were put from spring to autumn.
