Ciechanów station

With the worldwide expansion of industry and trade in the 19th century, the need arose to develop a new mode of transport that could cope with transporting the large quantities of raw materials and products needed in various areas of the economy. Work on locomotives was carried out in Great Britain, where modern steam locomotives were built and their mechanisms continued to be improved. Many kilometres of iron roads were built in Europe.

The Vistula River Railroad (Russian: Privislinskaya zheleznaya doroga) was officially opened on August 29, 1877. It was a broad-gauge railway with a gauge of 1524 mm. It had eight sections and twenty-four stations. It employed many workers; according to various sources, several thousand people worked on individual sections in a single day.

The Ciechanów railway station was a class IV station. The station was built of wood, according to Russian patterns, was one-storey with windows on the axis and a slightly marked part of the entrance. The mass was closed by two symmetrical one-storey buildings on the sides. The station has not survived to the present day. Its typical appearance is recalled by an almost identical, still existing, building of the Golęciń station in the Mazowieckie voivodeship.

The main builder of the railway was Witold Lanci (1829-1892). He is known for his buildings with Renaissance elements, such as the station in Lublin. Witold Lanci was born in Warsaw. He went to Rome to study. He studied architecture at St. Luke's Academy. After returning to Poland he executed many projects in Warsaw such as palaces, hotels, tenement houses, and carried out many reconstructions. Due to a gradual loss of sight, he stopped accepting orders.

The wooden mansions were built according to a certain pattern, and Lanci may have been the supervisor of the whole, not the author of the project. His photograph can be found on the collective tableau of the builders of the Vistula River Railroad.
