Wardrobe

Part of the collection: History of the city and the region

Popularization note

The wardrobe was part of a bedroom set belonging to the family of a rich merchant and distinguished social activist Konstanty Danielewicz (1863-1933). Its was made – like many other carpentry works commissioned by the Łańcut townsfolk – by the sculptor and woodcarver Walenty Gembarzewski (1859-1925). The wardrobe was hand-made according to the catalogue design and for many years it was used in Danielewicz's private townhouse, which which apart from his apartment house also housed a hotel and a restaurant. The building was erected by Stanisław Cetnarski's company in 1900, along the former Jarosławska Street (later renamed B. Pierackiego Street). In the interwar period, it was expanded and an additional floor was added to it. The restaurant run by Danielewicz was one of the best establishments in the city. It had a games room and a pergola in front of the entrance, and its customers included mostly the local intelligentsia, including the owner himself. For many years, he worked as a city councillor and deputy mayor of the city. He was the initiator of numerous economic and educational projects, including the construction of the local power station (1913), the expansion of the local school building (1924), he also advocated for the change of the status of Łańcut from a municipality to a city, and keeping the starost's office there. In 1926-1933, Danielewicz served as the president of the “Gwiazda” Burghers’ Association and an activist of the “Sokół” Society. For his merits he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the City of Łańcut, and the Różana Street, adjacent to his townhouse, was named after him as a tribute. Joanna Kluz
