Landing net

Wooden or mesh scoops were widely used in fishing. They were used to catch fish directly or to help take large fish off the hook or to fish them out of the nets. The scoops were used primarily during spawning but were also useful in winter for catching animals that swam close to the ice hole due to lack of oxygen. Sometimes they were also used to transport fish from the place they were caught.In the fishing collection of the Department of Ethnography of the Pomerania of the National Museum in Szczecin there are several scoops. One of them is a scoop coming from the first half of the 20th century, from the Baltic town of Darłowo. It has a very plain design - its appearance resembles a butterfly net, reinforced with iron rings. According to the information from the inventory book, a scoop was used to catch cod and flounder. It was acquired for the collection in 1949.
