Marina with ships

Painting from the museum’s collection; it depicts a harbour with ships. The colour scheme is light, with blue and grey-beige tones predominating. On the left part of the painting, we can see the sea, stretching all the way to the horizon; on the right there is irregular coastline, forming a small bay. On the shore rises a stone guarding tower with an extension; a lighthouse can be a bit deeper. On the sea, there are sailing ships and boats with people on board; on the shore groups of people are standing. The painting is framed by a wide, wooden, profiled, gilded frame, decorated with three types of ornaments in a striped arrangement. It is painted on a copper plate and dates from around mid-17th century and is attributed to Bonaventura Peeters. Bonaventura Peeters (born in July 1614 in Antwerp, died in July 1652 in Hoboken) was a painter of the Baroque period. He came from a family of painters and was for the whole of his life connected with Antwerp, where he worked with two of his brothers, also painter, and where he belonged to the Guild of St Luke. He is considered to be the best Flemish maritime painter of the 17th century, as paintings with maritime themes (known as ‘marinas’) were his favourites. He often painted storms, sea battles or disasters, as well as landscapes close to the water. The picture kept in Łańcut is exhibited in the Column Room on the first floor of the Łańcut Castle.
