Part of the collection: Graphics of German speaking countries
The graphic by Adolf Jutz shows Jesus standing under a tree on a small hill, surrounded by people - his disciples and numerous followers - who are looking at him and listening. Jesus is in the middle of the crowd, seeming to be part of it. The Son of God is shown as the first among equals. According to some accounts, the sermon took place on Mount of Beatitudes, on the northern shore of Lake Gennesaret near the city of Capernaum. According to another tradition, Jesus preached several times in different places. The print made using the lithography technique, hand-printed on tissue paper by Georg Pierre, was published in 1920/1921. It was the fourth version of Jutz's composition, The Sermon on the Mount. Jutz used a different composition to give this scene a different meaning. Adolf Jutz was born in 1887 in Freiburg im Breisgau and died in 1945 in Tegernsee. He was a disciple of the Grand-Ducal Baden School of Art in Karlsruhe. He studied in Florence and Paris at the Académie Ranson with Paul Sérusier and Maurice Denis. He worked mainly in Munich. He took up war, religion, and landscape subjects, commemorating the nature of Upper Bavaria, Jura, and Allgäu. He participated in the work of the Munich Artists' Association of the 2nd Secession.
