Part of the collection: Education and scouting in Lublin

Popularization note

The Hetman Jan Zamoyski Secondary School in Lublin was founded in 1915 at the initiative of a prominent social activist, priest Kazimierz Gostyński. Thanks to the cooperation with the Secondary School Teachers Association members, on 10 September 1915 Father Gostyński established an eight-class Real School, the foundation of today's 'Zamoy'. The co-founders of the school were Julian Borkowski, Stanisław Janiszewski and Cezary Rummel.

The first mention of the newly-formed school in the local press appeared on 13 June 1915. On 25 August, however, it was written that the school is 'being established by the Teachers' Association and would bear the name of Hetman Jan Zamoyski'. The choice of patron was not accidental; in the context of the political situation of the time, the patron was a famous historical figure, an eminent personality, a great patriot and leader, an excellent patron of the arts, and a genuine, well-educated humanist and statesman.

It should be stressed that the students, graduates and teachers of 'Zamoy' are the conscious heirs of the attitude presented by the school's patron, and their patriotic activities in times of tragic historical turmoil proved the best. Pupils and teachers participated in battles for the freedom of their homeland in 1918, during the Polish-Bolshevik War and World War II, and were members of the opposition during the Polish People's Republic.

Since the very beginning, 'Zamoy' has prided itself on its unique atmosphere, very high educational results achieved thanks to talented young people and the commitment of charismatic teachers that resulted in successes in subject competitions and sports. It continues to be the case today. That is why the school's graduates are active, open-minded people who have made outstanding contributions to the country and the local communities.

Meetings of graduates who feel a strong bond with their school have maintained the 'Zamoy' tradition. The last reunion took place in 2015 on the centenary jubilee of the institution, which is permanently inscribed in the history of Lublin.
