Portrait of a Turkish dignitary

Portrait of a Turkish nobleman A small painting from the collection of the Lubomirscy family, purchased by marshal’s wife for the Turkish Apartment (later given to Henryk Lubomirski, her adopted son). The painting depicts an older man, shown from the knees upwards, his left hand hidden behind his back, his right hand holding a sabre, its blade resting on the ground. The man is wearing a long, intensely creased white undergarment – the jellabiya – tied with a broad, soft belt of a gold-embroidered fabric. Over this gown he wears a grey-celadon coat with short sleeves. On his head he wears a white-golden turban. The portrait background is a dark-blue sky, slightly brighter to the right, in the lower right corner there are greyish clouds. Sadly, we we know nothing of the depicted man, we also do not know the author of the painting; he was most probably a French painter, and the painting stems from the 18th/ 19th century. The portrait has a wooden, gilded and profiled frame with a bead ornament band along the inner edge, and a volute and palmette ornament along the outer edge; it is displayed in the Turkish Apartment on the ground floor of the Castle of Łańcut.
