Chest of drawers
18th century, połowa XVIII wieku
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Meble i wyposażenie wnętrz
Biedermeier style furniture and interiors are distinguished by comfort, modesty and simplicity. One can venture to say that in Central and Eastern Europe it was a more moderate version or continuation of the pompous French Empire style. At that time, functional furniture made of native types of wood was widely used. Sometimes their greatest, if not the only decoration, were carefully selected and specially put together veneers. Very popular were chests of drawers. The presented piece of furniture is distinguished by an interesting grain of light veneer. Its additional decoration provides visual enhancement of the upper, slightly protruding drawer, forming a kind of beam - a top, which is decorated with antique genre scenes and palmettes washed in black ink on a light background. The static character of the furniture when viewed from the front is emphasised by the half-columns on the sides, which support the beam optically and create a balance to the top of the chest of drawers.
