Plate
1913 — 1930
National Museum in Szczecin
Part of the collection: Szczecin souvenirs
This plate was made by the porcelain factory founded in 1832 by Johann Friedrich Ferdinand Schumann, originally located at his estate in Kehnert and later moved to the Moabit – a suburb of Berlin. In 1835, the Porzellan-Manufaktur von F. Schumann & Sohn was taken over by Schumann's son. The factory specialised in the production of cups and table services, which were not characterised by high quality, but perfectly met the needs of a wider clientèle. Products of Schumann's factory offered modern designs referring to Rococo forms, competing with products of other factories, such as the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin, which at that time used outdated classical designs. In 1846 the Schumann factory became the largest porcelain producer in Germany. In the wake of its popularity, the company started to establish a network of branches, including one in the capital of the former Pomeranian Province - Szczecin. The company wanted to attract local buyers with products featuring images of places characteristic for the city. One of the many examples of this trend is the plate depicting the Sienny Market Square with the building of the Town Hall and the Stock Exchange, painted based on Gustav Franck's lithograph. Porzellan-Manufaktur von F. Schumann & Sohn shut down in 1913, but not before leaving a permanent mark on the history of German porcelain.
