Jug from a dinner service

Part of the collection: ceramics

Popularization note

Jug - a small faience jug in the shape of a tapering upward cylinder, with a shallowly turned spout. There is a handle on the axis of the spout, resembling a flattened letter "C". On both sides of the jug there is the same two-colour composition, depicting a conventional symmetrical bouquet of poppies, extending almost the full height of the vessel. It consists of 5 flowers arranged in three tiers. The composition also includes a pair of closed buds on long stems which, together with a centrally placed flower, complete the bouquet. A brown border runs down around the foot and up around the edge. The back of the handle is decorated with a long brown notched leaf, applied via a stencil. On the underside of the foot, there are two green marks in stamped print. One is the manufacturer's signature, depicting an anchor in an oval, with the inscription S. B. and S/ENGLAND underneath. Next to it is the signature of the London store: SOUTH AUDLEY ST./T GOODE CO/ LONDON. W. Between the signatures are two other marks applied by hand, one of which appears to be that of an artist that painted flowers. They are 3 burgundy dots. The second mark, black, may represent a small cross or the letter "x".
