Console clock

Part of the collection: Clocks

Popularization note

A rococo clock in a cabinet case and the wall console, on which it is placed, form a set. The cabinet with the mechanism is triple-glazed, closed from the top with a semi-circle and crowned with a high box-shaped top, with an asymmetric composition of leaves and a flower. The surface of the wooden construction is covered with marquetry: the background is made of brass sheet, in which an ornament with a motif of twigs with leaves and flowers filled with colourful enamel and tortoiseshell was cut. The dominant effect of the rococo styling is given by the full-plastic, carved, open-work, partly asymmetrical decoration in gilded bronze, with leaf motifs combined with scallops hold the edges of the door, the corners of the cabinet and the console. The bronzes decorating its lower part also act as four legs. In the light of the door, among the ornaments, there is a representation of the scene from La Fontaine’s fable – “The Fox and the Raven”.

The clock face is circular, brass with an enamelled central plaque (bearing the maker’s signature), minute and hour indication plaques and two holes for tensioning the springs for running and striking the half-hours and hours on one bell, from a Parisian type ratchet wheel. The mechanism, spring-driven and with a hook catch, is fitted with a long, lightweight pendulum on a threaded pendant.
