Spice box (besamim)

Museum of the history of Polish Jews
Part of the collection: Torah scrolls in the POLIN museum collection
The presented object is a pointer with two decorative nodes – in the middle of the shaft and at its top – and a chain at the last thickening, ending with a palm of a hand with an extended index finger. The part of the handle closer to the palm is round in cross-section, the other part is square in cross-section.
The yad bears a proprietary inscription in Hebrew, informing that it belongs to the synagogue in Nowe Miasto. Similar inscriptions were often a practice identifying objects with a specific Jewish community. Donated by the North American Council for the legacy of Polish Jews.
