The bust is a miniature copy of the ancient bronze bust of Epaminondas, located in the Museo Nazionale in Naples.
Epaminondas (c. 420-362 B.C.), a famous Theban general and politician, is presented as an older man, en face, with his head bowed downwards. His face is long, with a long nose, wrinkles, surrounded by a chin. Hair arranged in curly strands overlapping the forehead and temples.
