View of Lublin with the painting of Saint Anthony with the Baby Jesus

Part of the collection: Lubliniana. Painting views of Lublin and the Lublin Region (17th–early 20th c.)
Saint Anthony of Padua is venerated in the Lublin sanctuary - the parish of St. Paul. It is a former Bernardine church, to which we owe the cult of this saint in Lublin. His image is on the altar of the temple. A picture commemorating St. Anthony is also located in the Kraków Gate.
The composition of the graphics is divided into two parts: in the upper part it shows the image of a miraculous painting from the Bernardine Church, made around 1610 by an unknown Lviv painter, in the lower part there is a view of Lublin from the south. The painting presents Saint Anthony in a Franciscan habit, holding a lily in one hand and the Child Jesus on the other. Above them is a dove - a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The view of Lublin and the figure of the saint are framed together in a cartilaginous-auricular ornament, popular in the 17th century in Europe. The figure of the saint, towering over the city and situated on the axis of the composition, suggests his patronage over Lublin, which was probably initiated in the 17th century. On the left side of the church, there are Tarłów Palace, the Church of the Brigitte and the Church of the Brothers. In the distance, above the parish church, hovers the figure of Lublin's former patron - St. Michael the Archangel standing on a dragon, holding a palm in one hand and a shield marked with a cross in the other. As Renata Bartnik, the curator of the National Museum in Lublin noted, the schematic presentation of the city's architecture makes it impossible to identify all the buildings. At the bottom of the composition, by the inscription "Piaski" [Sand] and the cross, you can see several people walking along the path.
