Part of the collection: Metals
Brass magazine rack, partly gilded, an English product from the end of the 19th century, belongs to the collection of the Potocki family. Four-piece magazine rack with carrying handle, supported on four triangular legs. Two central parts higher than the two outer parts. Each part has the rectangular shape and wavy upper edge ended in a rectangular element with openwork rods helping to keep the magazines in place. Each leaf is filled with metal lath, in the upper part in the shape of rhombus and in the lower part in the shape of squares. A handle to carry the rack in the shape of an ogee arch, enclosed by a horizontal tube with decorative balls at the ends. There are several magazine racks in the museum’s collection, the one in question is exhibited on the first floor in the Library. The word gazeta (newspaper) probably comes from the Italian term for a small coin used to buy newspapers in Venice in the 17th century. The first newspapers were published from 1609 in Strasbourg, while in 1650, in Leipzig, a newspaper started to be published six days a week. The first newspaper published in Poland was “Merkuriusz Polski Ordynaryjny” which was first published in Krakow in 1661. The development of publishing in the sphere of newspapers and magazines in Poland occurred in the third quarter of the 18th century. The museum’s collection includes a large collection of magazines left over by the former owners, which are now gathered in the Library on the first floor of the castle. During the great reconstruction of the castle carried out at the time of Roman Potocki and his wife Elisabeth, a Library of Magazines (now called the Music Library) was created in the north-eastern tower being part of the Man’s Apartment. The magazines in the museum’s collection include such titles as: “Czas”, “Bluszcz”, “Kłosy”, “Motor”, “Kuryer”.
