Winged Amor playing the lute

Cupid playing the lute A small painting painted on porcelain, from the museum collection, it depicts a winged cupid playing the lute. The cupid (a plump boy a few years of age) is shown as a half figure, holding the instrument with his right hand, and plucking at the strings with his left hand. His head is bowed, the chin rested on the lute, the curly hair is golden-red. The eleven-string instrument is blue and brown, and is decorated with a wicker rosette. The background of the image is dark, natural, in bronze becoming black. In the lower right hand corner, we find the painter’s signature: „S. PERGER pinxit 1807”. Sigmund Ferdinand Perger was an Austrian painter and graphic artist from the 18th and 19th centuries. Born in 1778, died in 1841. The painting has a wooden, profiled gilded frame decorated with two types of ornaments in a band arrangement (Ionian cymathium and pearls), and can be viewed in the music library at the Male Apartment, in the first floor of the Castle of Łańcut.
