Postcard

Postcard with the so-called long address, published in ca. 1897, depicts a fragment of 3 Maja Street in Łańcut and a view of the so-called Big Reichard villa as seen in 1895. The street name was changed in 1891, during the centenary of the May Constitution. The Organising Committee appointed on this opportunity submitted a motion to the City Council to name one of the streets to commemorate the date of the 3rd of May, which was eventually approved. The renamed 3 Maja Street was the longest in the city at the time. The fragment visible in the postcard is its western section, stretching from the former Upper Gate towards Rzeszów. It was part of the so-called Imperial Road, a government road built in the city in 1810, which changed its name numerous times throughout history. In 1927, after heated discussions, a decision was made to rename it again to Piłsudskiego Street. After 1944, the street was briefly named Żwirki i Wigury Street, followed by K. Świerczewskiego Street and after the regime change in 1989, the original name – Piłsudskiego Street – was restored once again. There was another section of the street that continued to the east. Initially short, it was later extended by including the former Kańczuga Road, which led to the border with Sonina. To this day, it is still named 3 Maja Street. Joanna Kluz
