Market Square in Łańcut

Post card issued around the year 1927, published by the Łańcut entrepreneur and social activist Władysław Bałuciński. It depicts a fragment of the southern wall of the market square, with a view of the single-storey townhouse of the Bałuciński family (second from the right), expanded in 1929 by an upper floor and attic. The site used to include the owner’ residence and was the seat of the company founded by Józefa Bałucińska in ca. 1910, and then by her son Władysław. The company operated a restaurant (a cheap one, available to manual laborers and peasants coming to Łańcut for the market) and a hotel on the upper levels. To the east of the Bałuciński townhouse we see the casino building, where the family moved in when their house was being expanded. The officials’ casino was erected on a plot of land that once housed the Łańcut post office. It was built in 1894, and it was meant to be the seat of the Casino Society established in ca. 1880. Both described buildings are located at the official road running through the market square, the imperial road, constructed in 1795-1810. Joanna Kluz
