Chair

The presented Gdańsk-style chair is one of two identical chairs (S.537MŁ; S.538MŁ) brought to the Łańcut castle in 1924. The chairs were part of the collection inherited by Alfred Potocki from Mikołaj Potocki from Paris, a member of the Tulczyn branch of the family. Mikołaj Potocki was the son of Mieczysław, the grandson of Szczęsny and Zofia (known as beautiful Bitynka) Potockis. A landscape park established near Uman, Ukraine was named after Zofia. Having died childless in 1921, Mikołaj Potocki bequeathed his legacy to the fourth Łańcut Lord Ordynat. Although Alfred Potocki inherited binding financial liabilities, he was also given the souvenirs kept in the Museum-Castle to this day. Among them was a pair of Baroque chairs upholstered with cordovan leather - tanned, coloured, gilded leather with embossed patterns. The provenance of the chairs is not known. They resemble English Baroque furniture in their shape and their bent front legs and tall backrests correspond to the English Queen Anne style. However, one should remember that the influence of English furniture-making reached continental Europe. Chairs similar in shape were also made in Spain, the Netherlands, and Gdańsk.
