Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Painting and drawing
Pier with ships This painting from the collection of the museum depicts a pier with ships – the right side is taken up by the sea, a ship and a boat are nearing the shore, a sailing ship is seen moving away in the background. On the left side, there is a pier with groups of people waiting for the ship to moor. In the background, there are defence walls with a tower, surrounding a church with a tower. The colours of the painting are bright, in bluish-grey-beige tones. The painting is done on a copper sheet, and stems from halfway through the 17th century; it is attributed to Bonaventura Peeters the Elder. Bonaventura Peeters the Elder (b. July 1614 in Antwerp, d. in July 1652 in Hoboken) is a Baroque painter; he came from a family of painters, and worked in Antwerp all his life, where he worked with his two brothers – painters – and where he belonged to the guild of St. Luke. He was very frail, died early, and only travelled across the Netherlands. He is considered the best Flemish marine painter of the 17th century, because marine paintings (so-called „marinas”) were his favourite. He frequently painted storms, sea battles or catastrophes, or waterside landscapes. The painting of Łańcut is displayed in the Column Hall, in the first floor of the castle.
