Maria Lubomirska née Zamoyski

Portrait of Maria Lubomirska nee Zamoyska S. 5886 MŁ This painting from the collection of the Potoccy family (oval), the former owners of the castle of Łańcut, depicts the bust of a young, interesting woman, with her head and eyes turned to the left. The colours are bright, subdued, almost monochromatic. The light is falling from the left side. The background of the portrait is olive, broken by pink and beige, brighter above the arms of the figure. The depicted woman is Maria Zamoyska nee Lubomirska (b. in April 1841 in Vysotsk, d. December 1922 in Warsaw), daughter to Zdzisław Zamoyski and Józefina Jadwiga Zamoyska; she was the wife of Jan Tadeusz Lubomirski. The painting was done by Franz Schrotzberg (b. April 1811 in Vienna, d. May 1889 in Graz), an Austrian painter, a portrait artist. He studied at the Academy of Vienna, and exhibited his portraits and mythological scenes for the first time in 1832. He travelled across Italy, Germany and Belgium, where he studied the paintings of the local masters. He became a demanded painter beginning in 1840, in particular with respect to female portraits. In 1843 he became a member of the Academy of Vienna. His paintings (portraits) were frequently lithographed by Joseph Kriehuber. The painting has a broad, wooden, profiled, gilded frame, decorated with pearls and bands of fluting; it is displayed in one of the rooms in the 2nd floor of the castle of Łańcut.
