Part of the collection: Set of archaeological relics found in the Lublin Region
The presented ornament was found during the excavation of sand for construction purposes in Kopina, in the Łuków poviat.
As it was a loose find, i.e. one that does not provide additional information in the form of other artefacts and there is no possibility to examine the place where it was found, it is difficult to determine exactly when the object was made.
However, thanks to similar finds, archaeologists have managed to determine the cultural affiliation of the described ornament. It was probably created around 5 thousand years ago and has been attributed to the representatives of the Globular Amphora culture existing at that time. The population of this culture was mainly involved in pastoralism, moving very often.
The burials of the people of the Globular Amphora culture are usually richly furnished with grave goods, which often include amber ornaments.
Finding amber ornaments in the area of the present-day Lublin region is significant from the scientific point of view. The fact that it travelled several hundred kilometres from the coastal areas may indicate long-distance trade between the communities of that time. It is possible that this beautiful ornament was exchanged for a flint raw material, which was mined by the people of the Globular Amphora culture in the striped flint mine located near today's Krzemionki Opatowskie.
The monument has survived to our times in poor condition. Numerous damages, a cracked surface and defects on both sides meant that conservators had a lot of work to do with it. However, they managed to bring the ornament to such a state that today it can be seen at the permanent archaeological exhibition in the National Museum in Lublin.
