Part of a moat with walls
20th century
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Photography
The photograph presents a fragment of old fortifications on the eastern side with the moat, walls and linden trees growing along the alley around the moat in place of the former embankment. The linden alley was planted by Princess Izabella Lubomirska (deceased in 1816) after the embankments erected in front of the moat were spread apart. Earthen embankments, together with the walls and the moat, comprised the Łańcut fortifications erected in the 17th century. At the end of the 18th century, the system was no longer needed; therefore, inside the moat, in direct vicinity of the castle, the first garden was set up and linden alleys were planted in place of the embankments, encircling the moat. The trees have grown tall; together with the plants covering the walls, make the castle immensely picturesque. Aldona Cholewianka-Kruszyńska
