Photograph of Stanisław Maybaum (Marzyński) and an unrecognized child
c. 1901
Museum of the history of Polish Jews
Part of the collection: Photographs from the collection of Halina Kamińska (Mamelok) née Baruch
The studio photograph of three children, shown by the description on the back as Mich, Anielka, Staś, or Stanisław Maybaum (Marzyński) dressed here in sailor's garb. A nail or pinhole at the upper edge. The photograph is affixed to the original cardboard box of the Łódź atelier (the Maybaums/Marzyńskis lived in Łódź). On the obverse, next to the photograph (at the right edge), the atelier's logo and an indication of the cities in which the photographic studio had its offices embossed in white:. On the reverse, there is a lithograph with the logo of the atelier, a representation of water flowers and advertising inscriptions in an ornamental font, in style close to the fin de siècle spirit referring to handwriting. It is significant that the atelier, while choosing a modern font, clearly had a problem with Polish diacritical marks, hence the incorrect spelling of some words: ENJOYED BY THE GIFT OF HIS HIGH PRINCIPAL HIGHNESS, THE NEPTOR OF THE TRONE OF THE GREAT PRINCE MICHAEL ALEXANDROWICZ || ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY REMBRANDT IN ŁÓDŹ | 97 Piotrkowska Street | On [request] you can have copies | The weather makes no difference in the photographs.
