Fani Landau's letter to Paulina Włodawer with the news of the death of Fania's husband, Mietek Landau, the illness of her son, Milek, as well as the heroic rescue of her (Ewa’s) brother Jan Bajer by Ewa Bajer - Fania Landau's and Paulina’s Włodawer friend (Today it is the first day when we can say [:] he is saved. Eve formally rescued him out of the clutches of death).
Fragments of the letter - original spelling, retaining very significant verbal errors of the bereaved woman:
Dear Pepa!
Much, very much has changed since my last letter to you. Well, today a week passed since I buried my Mietek. I am yet to get used to the thought that I no longer have him. […] But how do I have to live because I have such a hard task to raise my poor little children. I cannot focus at all after this great loss of mine, because everyday worries distract me from it. Bad luck still pursues me. Milek could not attend his father's funeral because he had a fever of 39 degrees that day. He's been in bed for a week already. The temperature drops and sometimes rises back to 38. It is uncertain, possibly it is also typhus, a milder case. […] I walk, just like a robot. I am very happy that Artek is health, all the time, despite my great misfortunes, he was in my heart. I often think about you. Take good care of him now.
Lots of kisses
