Schleuchter two-horse harness

Part of the collection: Vehicles and harnesses

Popularization note

Double Collar Harness, Austria, Schleuchter, Late 19th Century Among the harnesses purchases by third ordynat Roman Potocki, there is a double collar harness produced by the Austrian Nideltz company. It is made of black patent leather. It is a classic, high quality English-style harness with thin collar pads, narrow and delicate backstraps, two braces and a breeching. The harness fittings are made of white metal imitating silver. On the backstraps and on both traces of the breeching, there are openwork heraldic elements with the Pilawa coat of arms and the motto Scutum opponebat scutis below. Snap hooks of the backstraps are topped with laces. The harness, together with other Łańcut harnesses, was evacuated to Vienna in 1944 by Ordynat Alfred Antoni Potocki, who was fleeing from the Red Army. In 1959, it was donated to the Museum by the widow, Izydora Potocka née Jodko-Narkiewicz. Aldona Cholewianka-Kruszyńska
