Slug iron

Slug iron The introduction of the slug iron was the first step of improvement after the 19th century saw a rise in the need for efficient ironing equipment. It was not only about fashion, but personal hygiene too, as a hot iron would partly freshen the clothing. The iron slug was heated on a stove and placed within a special device made most commonly of brass. The hand was insulated by wood or porcelain, and the iron itself was frequently decorated with metal components. Houses used to have several iron slugs – when one was in use, the other was heated. This invention had one basic advantage – it did not stain the clothing. The described clothing iron is cast in metal, it has a long grip fixed by two screws and covered by a rolled wood cylinder. The iron base has a swivel cover, fixed by a screw. Inside the base there are protruding guides holding the slug, made of cast iron. Joanna Kluz
