Part of the collection: Collection of Dogonian art
According to mythology, the ancestors of the Dogon came to Earth from a planet in the Sirius system on the Ark of Nommo called koro, which is also a symbol of the new order and world in which the Dogon live and which they accept. Everything the modern Dogon have came out of the Ark. It was guided by the deity Nommo, who now inhabits all standing and flowing waters on Earth. According to oral tradition, koro landed near Lake Debo and now rests at its bottom. The organisation of the world continued through the first five generations of four tribes descended from Nommo and eight mythical ancestors. During this time, matters relating to the division of farmland, the rules of marriage, and the development of all techniques were arranged. Yurugu, the symbol of the choas and the world, which gave way to the developing and organising humanity on Earth, chased after his elusive twin sister, who was also his female soul. The function of Nommo being the teacher of all beings and the absolute master was to limit the chaotic actions of Yurugu. To this end, he divided and arranged into twenty-two categories all the elements constituting the universe. Nommo also implemented one by one all the stages of reorganization of the world. The primary human activity became agriculture, which was originally Yurugu's idea, but was developed by humans under Nommo's supervision. The cultivation of the land was to cleanse it of the disgrace to which Yurugu had contributed. It was also to restore to the land its reproductive functions responsible for growth and vegetation, and thus to become conducive to human reproduction.
