Jug

The earthenware jug made with the use of a potter's wheel is a luxurious vessel, one of the elements of equipment of a burial from the late Roman period (the end of the 3rd - 1st half of the 4th century AD) discovered in the area of the multicultural settlement. The research at the site was undertaken in 1959 by archaeologists from the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw, and it yielded numerous finds from various chronological periods. After being processed, these materials, related territorially to the Lublin region, were transferred to the collection of the Department of Archaeology of the National Museum in Lublin.

The most interesting of the discovered objects is the burial of a young girl (about thirteen years old) and the accompanying grave goods: nine vessels, seven of which represent high quality turned pottery, a clay rattle, a silver clasp and a glass vessel.

The jug was made using an advanced turning technique on the potter's wheel. It has a gently rounded top, tapering to a high cylindrical neck. On the highest point of the abdomen there is a circumferential groove. The neck is decorated with an ornament of enlightened stripes. The greatest decoration of the vessel is a large ribbon ear.

The buried girl belonged to the community of the so-called Masłomęcz group, which in the younger Roman period (3rd and 4th century AD) created a highly developed civilization in the Hrubieszów Basin. It is probably evidenced by turned earthenware and glass bowls imported from the Black Sea area.
