Józef Potocki

Portrait of Józef Potocki A minor portrait from the collection of the Potoccy family, the former owners of Łańcut castle; it depicts a young man, as a bust, on a plain background. This is count Józef Potocki, crown cutter (b. 1735, d. December 1802 in Vienna), son to Stanisław Potocki, voivode of Poznań, and Helena Zamoyska. He was starost of Leżajsk, emissary, marshal of the Ruthenian voivodeship. He gained his title of count from empress Maria Theresa. He was chevalier of the Order of the White Eagle and of the Order of St. Stanislaus. He was also father to Jan Potocki, the author of „The Manuscript Found in Saragossa”. The Łańcut portrait depicts him with the grand band of the Order of the White Eagle, in a navy coat embroidered in gold, and a powdered wig on his head. . The upper right corner reads ”Józef Potocki Krajczy Koronny”. The painting, from the 19th century, is batten-framed, and can be seen in the ground floor corridor of the castle of Łańcut. The castle collection also has a second portrait of Józef, repeating this view, in pastel, and slightly older, from the 2nd half of the 18th century.
