Part of the collection: Correspondence from Emilia Endler Ratz
The letter from Halina Altman to Emilia Ratz on six pages. From the content of the letter, in which the author persuades her friend to join the army: My dear friends! My dear friends, in your letter you both raise an issue which concerns you and which is very topical indeed. Your doubts are proof that you are very poorly informed on Polish affairs. It is understandable that lately you have not had time to participate more closely in the life of the Z.P.P. [Union of Polish Patriots; see https://sztetl.org.pl/en/glossary/zwiazek-patriotow-polskich], but I think that now you will be real participants in all the Union's activities in your area (I think there should be a branch there). [...] You see Miluś, I'm a bit sorry, but I'll write you what I think, I don't want to hide from you. It seems to me that at the moment (after receiving your diploma) your duty is to join the First Polish Corps. I remember, back in the spring, you wrote that you didn't know what to do. I advised you then to finish the Institute. Now the situation is a bit different. You have finished the Institute, you are supposed to work as a foreman's assistant (by the way, it doesn't matter, it would be the same if you were to become an engineer right away). The international political situation, and especially the situation in Poland, requires us to create a compact, unified, politically conscious armed force. In my opinion, it is the duty of each of us to take part in the organisation of our army. I remember, dear, how you wrote at the time that you might be more useful as an engineer than as an unqualified nurse. I agreed with you then, but now I say again, the situation is different. Being in our ranks, you will not only be a simple orderly or a radio operator (like me), but you will be a soldier aware of the goals of our fight, having a clear picture of future Poland. | It is clear, my dear, that all that I have written here may seem to you to be wrong. You will act as you see fit; in any case, you should take part in Polish life in the Z.S.R.R. Do you read Polish press (Nowe Widnokręgi, Wolna Polska)?
