Omnibus

Part of the collection: Vehicles and harnesses

Popularization note

An omnibus is a passenger and cargo vehicle for one or two horses in a collar harness; it was purchased by Roman Potocki from Schustala-Wagenfabrik. The omnibus was used for the transportation of servants (six persons) and to carry the luggage placed on the roof. It was also used to transport the servants of the guests from the railway station along with their luggage. The Łańcut omnibus, with a chest-type coachman's box and a wedge seat at the front with the front fender made of black leather on a frame, is equipped with two lamps on the sides. The section for six passengers has the form of a rectangular engraved body in yellow colour with stripes imitating black plaiting in the bottom section. At the back, there is a door and in the centre (in the upper section) of the side and front walls, there are windows. Along the roof edge, there was an iron deck for luggage varnished in black and by the rear wall, next to the door, a black metal ladder used to put the luggage on the roof. Furthermore, on the other side of the door, a round, suspended stool was installed. The interior of the box has modest equipment; there are two sideways facing, simple suspended benches along the walls, under which small trunks could be placed. The omnibus of the Potocki family in Łańcut preserved in the original condition is one of few vehicles of this type in Europe. Aldona Cholewianka-Kruszyńska
