Training brake

Part of the collection: Vehicles and harnesses

Popularization note

A training brake for a four-in-hand or a team of five horses. It was purchased in the renowned Vienna coach building firm of Carl Marius in the 1880s. It is one of two wheeled vehicles which were not used for outings kept in the Łańcut coach room of the Potocki family. The brake has a simple, long body, varnished in black with an entrance from the rear side. At the rear wall, there is a low door and a wrought footboard on an elongated extension in front of it. Inside, there are two longitudinal (sideways facing) benches with back rests. The upholstery on the benches is flat with studs, made of brown leather. The coachman’s box, quite high with a wedge seat, is also upholstered in brown leather. At the side of the box, there are handles for two rectangular lanterns. On the right hand side of the box, there is a winch of the manual crank operated block brake. The chassis is black with yellow stripes. The brake was one of few carriages from the Potocki coach house to undergo a thorough renovation in the renowned company owned by the Bogajewicz family in Pniewy Szamotulskie, which operated between 1890 and 2015.
