Return of the tortured

Popularization note

One of many group scenes in the whole series, the overtone of which is based on the confrontation, this time without bitter irony, of the title with what is presented. Without showing almost any details of the silhouettes of the several figures depicted, the artist visualises above all their physiognomies and painful, fixed gazes. The long-haired figure shown in profile at the left edge of the composition seems different and somewhat puzzling in terms of interpretation; it certainly does not belong to the crowd of tortured people.
