Painting

From the 1890s, a change was visible in Polish art due to the appearance of selected features of Impressionism similar to Gierymski's earlier interests. The inspiration of the new trend in art was taken from Paris (where they went in 1889) by Józef Pankiewicz and WładysławPodkowiński. The period of inspiration with Impressionism ended quite quickly (before the mid-1990s) and can be regarded as an inspiration for liberation from academic rules. The National Museum in Szczecin will hold two works by Pankiewicz from 1908, undoubtedly inspired by Impressionism. When the work was created, the artist was in France, where he established friendly relations with Pierre Bonnard and Felix Fénéon. The painting shows a view of the Louvre from Paris's Place Carrousel. The building is depicted very sketchily. In the foreground, the attention is focused on the lawn; gently to the right is a flowerbed filled with red-flowering flowers, surrounded by various coloured plants, forming a star-shaped arrangement. Everything has been painted with quick brushstrokes (dotted at times), inaccurate, without any contours. The artist presented both works in 1908 at the exhibition of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
