Inpark

Zygmunt Skrętowicz was born in 1902 in the village of Kuropatniki, the Brzeżany district, the Tarnopol Voivodeship. There he became a blacksmith but also worked as a stonemason. In 1946, he came to Worowo in the Łobez district, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, and after receiving a farm, he made a living from farming. In 1948, he started to sculpt. He quickly achieved his style characterised by cheerful, colourful polychromy and familiar themes, mainly related to weddings, music and relaxation. He also sculpted works related to national themes, a unique series devoted to the victims of concentration camps. He participated in many local, national and international exhibitions. He was often awarded, and his sculpture 'Organ Grinder' was even on a postage stamp. He died in Worowo in 1971.The sculpture 'In the Park' is a warm, pleasant to the eye and colourfully refined composition, characteristic of the work of Zygmunt Skrętowicz. Made in one piece of linden wood, it depicts two couples on a bench under a tree. What draws attention in the sculpture is the calmness and closeness of the figures, which the author conveyed not only through gestures but also through calm colours in pastel, subdued shades. Skrętowicz's extraordinary sensitivity to colours, to which he has remained faithful throughout his creative path, is a feature thanks to which his sculptures speak to us mainly through colour, sometimes covering up the deficiencies of his sculpting technique.
