Part of the collection: Education and scouting in Lublin

Popularization note

The Building School was established on 1 March 1929, with engineer Kazimierz Danowski as its first director. From the very beginning it educated future construction, road and drainage technicians, there was a choir, a drama club and the Almi mandolin group. In its early days it was known as the School of Construction Crafts; in the interwar period it was one of the largest vocational schools in Lublin.

The Private School of Construction (PSB) in Lublin was located at 3 Radziwiłłowska Street, and was established on the initiative of director Łukasiewicz. A Building and Road Gymnasium and Secondary School were established, to which students from other schools in Lublin were admitted. In August 1941, forty-two students graduated from the building department of this institution, with diplomas issued in Polish and German. In November 1941, a secret scout troop started operating at the school, and clandestine military training for teachers took place.

In the school year 1942/1943 as many as twenty departments were formed, and an exhibition of pupils' works was organised in secret from the authorities. In October 1943 the authorities appointed Andrzej Kozicki principal of the school, a position he held until liberation from German occupation. After him, engineer Ludwik Sośnierz became principal, and after his departure the school was headed by engineer Konrad Jankowski. On 1 January 1948, the school was nationalised and renamed State Building School.

The 1950s was a period of expansion of the school - the Evening Technical School for Workers was opened, construction of a dormitory began, new courses were created, and the department of industrial and sanitary installations was established. On 1 September 1959 it took on the name of the State Building Schools.

In 1960-1980, the building was further extended to guarantee further development and prestige, a brass band was formed and a building materials laboratory was set up. The school won numerous awards and medals, including the National Education Commission medal.

The 1990s saw the creation of the PSB television studio and an IT laboratory. The school was managed by Grażyna Kubuj-Bełz, who has been the principal ever since. Currently, the school is known as the School of Geodesy and Road Engineering.
