Part of the collection: European classics of modernity
Józef Czajkowski and his brother Stanisław was counted among Jan Stanisławski's students, although he did not formally study with him and only participated in the plein-air workshops organised by him. The painting titled Wnętrze pracowni [Inside the Studio] acquired for the collection of the National Museum in Szczecin in 1970, is an interesting combination of the motif of an empty studio with a landscape spreading behind a large window in front of it. The open composition (painted alla prima) was created based on a contrast close to the Munich school, where the artist also studied. The tree depicted against the white background of the sky is painted in a style close to Stanisławski's, the landscape master. In this fragment of the landscape, we can also see white; the light from behind the window falling on individual interior elements is typical for Art Nouveau. The part depicting the studio was painted in dark tones. In the foreground, there is an easel with a high, strongly accentuated vertical part. It is worth noticing the table standing in-depth under the window. On it, there is a dark, architectural painting leaning against the wall. It is not insignificant, as Czajkowski was also involved in applied graphics and designing stained glass windows. Two years after painting the picture, however, he began to work mainly as an architect and designer in applied arts. In this field, he received numerous awards.
