Portrait of a woman
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Malarstwo i rysunek
The sketch was likely painted in 1962, since the original was created that year in the artist’s Vienna studio. He did not make sketches directly on the canvas with pencil or charcoal. Instead, he prepared them beforehand in a small format, using oil paint on cardboard or plywood, just like the sketch seen here. This method is characteristic of Czedekowski. It allows one to observe the stages of the artist's work, as he transforms a colourful outline of an idea prepared on plywood into a carefully painted portrait. In fact, the sketch itself is already a fully developed motif, the content of the painting, which achieves the precision of forms and colours in the original.
In the sketch of the painting "The Golden Mask," depicting the artist's wife, we see a woman in a dark ball gown with bare shoulders. Her left arm, resting on the armrest of a chair, is covered by a white, long glove. Under her hand lies a red flower, still of an undetermined species. Her right hand, raised, holds a gold and green mask. Her face has strongly defined red lips. The woman wears no jewellery, with only a red scarf adorning her neck. In her hair, there is an outline of some ornament. The background is kept in dark, cold shades of muted blue and grey. On the right side of the composition, there is likely a draped fabric in dark burgundy tones. The upper part of the plywood is unpainted, separated by a thick, dark line.
In a 1989 photograph, featured in an album by Maria Borowiejska-Birkenmajerowa, which shows a glimpse of Czedekowski's Vienna atelier, the sketch for "The Golden Mask" can be seen standing on a chest of drawers next to a paint palette.
