Egg storage cabinet

Part of the collection: Material culture of West Pomerania

Popularization note

The egg cupboard is one form of food storage cabinet and cupboard once popular in West Pomerania. Long-term storage of foodstuffs became a problem, especially in summer, when there were still no refrigerators. Household cellars, being separate buildings, various rooms, granaries, and larders, as well as special types of furniture served this purpose. Typical of cupboards and food cabinets were the open panels of single-leaf doors (in cupboards in their upper part), side panels and, for the hanging versions, also the bottoms. The frame was filled with vertical rungs either as simple slats or in the form of decorative balusters. They were placed or hung in typical household rooms, but decorative ones sometimes even found their way into living quarters. Such airy cupboards and cabinets were best used for storing dairy products, and the presented egg cupboard shows this functional furniture's variety and special design. Iwona Karwowska
