Egg storage cabinet

Part of the collection: Material culture of West Pomerania

Popularization note

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, local small-town and rural carpentry craftsmen produced a range of furniture useful for household management. Their product range also included hanging cabinets for storing eggs. Screened only by vertical slats, the open face and side walls, and often the lower part of the cupboard, made it an airy container for storing dairy products - or in the presented case, for storing eggs. If it was placed in a cool place, usually the pantry, it fulfilled the refrigeration role perfectly. At a time when refrigerators were not yet known, cupboards and cabinets with open door panels and sides provided popular food storage furniture in West Pomerania. This was particularly favourable for dairy products, which is why these cupboards were also often called dairy cupboards. Iwona Karwowska
