Part of the collection: Rzeźby
Allegory of Earth. The sculpture is part of a group of sculptures created by Jan Albrecht Siegwitz and Jan Adam Karinger between 1729 and 1734. It was originally located in the palace garden in Brzezinka near Oleśnica, from where it was moved around 1950 to the palace gardens of the Museum in Wilanów. In 1961, the entire group was transferred to the Castle Museum in Łańcut, where it was exhibited in the western part of the park, and in 1999, it was moved to the inner courtyard of the castle. Currently, the group is located in the Carriage House.
The sandstone sculpture depicts a pair of embracing and conversing putti. The putto on the left, with a half-smile on its face, kneels on its right knee. In its right hand, it holds flowers, while with its left hand, it offers a burst pomegranate to the other putto. Its thighs are covered by drapery adorned with a bouquet of flowers. The putto on the right leans toward the first one. With its right arm, it embraces the other putto, and with its left hand, it touches the fruit. Its hand is wrapped with a ribbon decorated with diamond-shaped details and cabochons (details in the form of smoothly polished stones), while its hips are covered with sheaves of wheat. On the head of this putto is a crown in the shape of a building with four towers topped by battlements. Hair styled into a knot emerges from beneath the crown, intertwined with the same ribbons as the one wrapping the hand. At the back, the putto is covered with drapery featuring distinctly marked, deep folds.
