In the egg basket

Popularization note

The depiction of a soldier in a long grey coat and cap and two nuns, shorter than him and standing slightly behind. Women are over two painted contour baskets (light thick line). Inside the contours of one of them - visible on the left - is a huddled child, leaning towards the left edge. The painting is inspired by a fragment of an account by Lea Alterman, who, when she was five years old, was committed to the convent of the Congregation of Franciscan Sisters of the Family of Mary in Brwinów. The painting depicts the dramatic scene of the girl's hiding during the arrival of the Germans, who were requisitioning food. The girl was quickly hidden in one of the baskets and covered with straw and eggs. The nuns begged the soldier not to take this basket and leave the eggs for the children to take another.See: https://sprawiedliwi.org.pl/en/o-sprawiedliwych/irena-sendlerowa/dzieci-ireny-sendlerowej
