Popularization note

Ink bottle The chest-style ink bottle from the Potoccy collection, crystal glass and silver, English made, from halfway through the 19th century. The crystal glass chest, cut and ground to a diamond pattern, colourless, rectangular with truncated corners, closed with a swivel top on hinges. The edges of the cover and the ink bottle container are framed in silver, in the form of two bands with a floral twig ornament. The top is ground in horizontal and vertical facets, in the centre, in a smooth field, two coats of arms: Pilawa under the comital crown (Potoccy) and Pogoń above the prince mitre (Sanguszko). Under the coats of arms there is a band with the engraved coat of arms motto of the Potoccy „SCUTUM OPPONEBAT SCUTIS”. The chest bears on its front wall a rectangular plaque, decorated in a floral pattern, hiding the lock with key. Inside the chest, there is a glass inlay in silver framing, on four legs, with two openings for a non-existing ink stand and sand bottle. The inlay has a silver, elongated container for pen holders. The coats of arms on the cover indicate Alfred Józef Potocki, the 2nd ordinary, and his wife, Maria Klementyna Potocka nee Sanguszko.
