Powizytkowski Church

At 6 Narutowicza Street in Lublin, opposite the Municipal Theatre, is the Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Victorious (de Triumpho). It is sometimes referred to as the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Victorious. The church was built as a votive offering after the victorious Battle of Grunwald in the early 15th century. Prisoners of war, who were settled in the village of Niemce near Lublin, helped with the construction. Some time later, King Władysław Jagiełło brought a two-conventual order of Brigids and Brigidines from Gdańsk to Lublin. After the reform of the congregation only the female branch remained. The nuns took care of the development of the residence. The interior of the church was covered with paintings. Only their fragment in the attic has been preserved until today, showing a figure of a knight on horseback accompanied by his retinue. The scene may represent Jogaila's triumphal entry into Lublin.

In the early 19th century, the Brigidines were replaced by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as the Visitation Sisters. After they left the city in 1882, the management of the church passed into the hands of the secular clergy. In 1918, the monastery was handed over to the Ursulines. It was used as a school. In the first decade of the 20th century, thanks to the efforts of Father Jan Władziński, the church was restored. The roofs were renewed, the floors improved and the surroundings put in order. The brick naves remained - the main one and the side one adjoining from the west, with a characteristic triangular pediment and a quadrilateral tower. On the 500th anniversary of the victory over the Teutonic Knights, an inconspicuous monument in the form of a brick quadrilateral with the dates "1410-1910" was erected near the church.
